World Conference on Women and Sport kicks off in Helsinki
The sixth World Conference on Women and Sport has kicked off in Helsinki, Finland.
Organised by the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG), the four-day conference will see more than 700 industry leaders from 100 countries gather to discuss women and sport under the overall theme of "Lead the Change - Be the Change".
During the conference, delegates will look to find ways to improve and promote the role of women in all aspects of sport, using five "sub themes":
Buck the trend - Leading the change in sport policy Be your best coach - Pursuing excellence in leadership & coaching Move me! - Physical activity, health & well-being for life 100% sport - Enhancing participation through creativity & innovation Sport without fear - Sport as a safe haven & bastion for human rights
The conference is supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), whose president Thomas Bach, will present a keynote session on Thursday 12 June.
Bach said: "Women's participation in sport and sports administration is a key priority for the IOC.
"A great deal has been achieved on and off the field of play in recent years - all sports at the Olympic Games are now open to women, for example, and every National Olympic Committee has now sent female athletes to the Games - but we all know that change in this area does not come easily."
• The IWG was founded in 1994 and the first World Conference on Women and Sport was held the same year in Brighton, UK. During the inaugural conference, a Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport was created, which has since been signed by more than 400 organisations worldwide. • This year's conference will be streamed live online - click here for more information and the links to the streams.
