Partnership was the subject of the evening. More than 40 healthcare and exercise professionals addressed the fact that cardiac and stroke patients have better outcomes when they're supported post-operatively with a dedicated exercise programme delivered by specialist staff - in addition to helping other conditions such as obesity and mental health.

Dr Searle outlined the role of exercise in both preventative and remedial medicine: "Partnership is the key to the health of our nation: a partnership between healthcare and activity professionals is vital if we're to succeed in our shared ambitions of creating a healthier nation and a more efficient NHS.

"There is well established evidence that 'exercise as medicine' works. All we need to do now is change the habits of prescribers, as well those of as a nation that understands the principles of the Department of Health's 'eat well move more' message, but that needs help turning thought into deed."
